JOHN HUGH ROY DUNCAN
DUNCAN RITES SET TOMORROW
Shriner, Banker, Real-Estate Broker Died Friday At 84

Masonic funeral services for John H. Duncan, active shriner and real-estate broker, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at a funeral establishment at North and Pennsylvania Avenues.
Burial will be in Loudon Park Cemetery.
Mr. Duncan, who was born and educated in Baltimore, died Friday at his home 1829 East Thirty-first Street after a long illness. He was 84 years old.
At the time of his death, Mr. Duncan maintained a real estate and insurance office in the Emerson Hotel, was a member of the board of directors of the Rice Bakery and treasurer of Boumi Tenple.

LEFT BANKING FOR REAL ESTATE
He was a past potentate of Boumi Temple, a former member of School Commissioners and had been prominent in banking circles until 1929 when he left the banking business to become a real-estate man.
Mr. Duncan's first employment was in the record office of the Superior Court in the days when the clerk of the court was James Bond, a commission merchant, who established the block index system of keeping land records in Baltimore.
In an article for The Sunday Sun Magazine's feature, "I Remember…", Mr. Duncan recalled when the "lawyers' corner" was located at the southeast corner of St. Paul and Lexington streets in the days before the turn of the century when the Records office stood there, next door to the old Courthouse.
"They (the lawyers) were impressive looking men and generally dressed in an elegant
manner with frock coats and black ribbon ties." Wrote Mr. Duncan, an attorney himself, who was satirically noted in his younger days.
Twelve years after that first job, Mr Duncan joined the Title Guarantee and Trust Company of which he became a vice president. He resigned in 1926 and became president of the Old Town National Bank.
 APPOINTED TO SCHOOL BOARD
Three years later, when the Old Town Bank was merged with the Drovers and Mechanics National Bank, Mr. Duncan accepted the vice presidency of the Capital Title and Guarantee Company in Washington. That same year he gave up banking for real estate.
A Democrat, Mr. Duncan was first appointed to the School Board in 1926 by Mayor Howard W. Jackson to fill out an unexpired four year term. Mayor William F. Broening reappointed him to the board in 1930 for a full six-year term.
On his first appointment, Mr. Duncan commented that education dies at the base of business. The best way, he said, to improve business and business men is to improve education.
Mr. Duncan once described himself as "gentleman farmer". For many years, he had owned an 80 acre farm in Harford County, personally supervising its management.
MANY MASONIC POSTS
Mr. Duncan had held many high Masonic posts, among them: past Master of the Oriental Lodge of Baltimore City; past eminent commander of Beauseant and past grand commander ot the State of Maryland.
He is survived by two sons, R. Singleton Duncan and Major George H. Duncand; three daughters, Mrs. William L. Rivers, Mrs. William Harold Batt, and Mrs. Ruth Duncan Childs; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
